Originally from the west coast, I moved to St. John’s in 1988 to attend school. I graduated from Memorial University in 1995, with a B.A in Sociology. Later, completing a Criminology Certificate from Memorial, in 2009. I have worked in the Child and Youth Care sector since 2011; I am currently a Logistics and Inventory Coordinator. I was involved in wrestling in high school but had an avid interest in the martial arts. Upon moving to St. John’s, I studied Aikido until graduating from Memorial, with Sensei Al Shehen. In 2005, I joined the Newfoundland Karate Association, achieving shodan in 2012, from Sensei Dr. David Bell. In 2009, I started the study of Ryukyu Kobujutsu with Sensei Derek Ryan and achieved shodan in 2024, from Sensei Noel Blaise. In 2014, I opened St. John’s Shotokan and Kobudo at the St. John’s Martial Arts Centre, with Sensei Dan Blackmore. This dojo moved to Max Martial Arts in 2016 and closed in 2017. I opened my own dojo, Shima-Kai Martial Arts at the St. John’s Martial Arts Centre in 2017. Shima-Kai operated as a private dojo, as I trained with fellow black belts and a few private students. I hosted karate and kobujutsu seminars during the years it was private. In 2024, Shima-Kai joined the International Karate Daigaku and opened to the public, accepting students. In 2025, I received my Nidan from Shihan Ken Woon-A-Tai. I am currently enrolled in the IKD Kenshusei (Instructors Training Program).
